One Laptop Per Child Give the Gift of Connectivity and Learning

Hello to my friends and readers who may have stumbled upon my blog. I wanted to write about the OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) project. This project is headed by Nicholas Negroponte the author of ‘Being Digital’ Being Digital, which is one of the several sources for the project’s mission.
The Goal as related from http://www.laptop.org/en/vision/index.shtml

“Our goal: To provide children around the world with new opportunities to explore, experiment and express themselves. read more”
So why do I agree with this assessment and project, because I believe people matter. I believe people of every nation tongue and tribe deserve to be empowered and encouraged and have the opportunity to educate themselves. This project isn’t about the technology or the laptop, the laptop is a doorway to interconnectedness and amazing opportunities for these young children around the world to find a way to learn, grow and play that they probably have never experienced before.
Do I believe technology is a cure all? (Absolutely not!) Do I believe that these children will be completely immune to the dangers inherent in an interconnected life? (Unfortunately Not! Human nature lends to exploitation and evil far to often Rom 3:23) Do I believe the potential benefit outweighs the costs and potential dangers? Absolutely, there is something about connectedness and learning that opens the mind to possibilities unimaginable before. This technology isn’t about the computer, although it is amazing!
Did you know that each one of these laptops doesn’t even require an electrical outlet? ( A foot powered pedal provides power without the electric outlet) In addition their built in Mesh Networking device allows interconnected Laptops to piggy back off each other and connect to the Internet from any other connected laptop!
Well that’s about all for OLPC for now, why don’t you check it out and if you are ready to give or to get goto http://www.laptopgiving.org/en/index.php

Could You Survive a Digg Storm with WordPress and a Shared Host?

Photos from a Storm

Have you recently found yourself the center of attention? Did Stumbleupon, Technocratica and Delicious all tag your blog as a mecca of information for the masses. Did your traffic spike beyond levels that would make any reasonable server and host pull out their hair?

Here are 3 easy tips to help get you out of this mess!

1. De-activate ALL other plugins! (If you can get to the WordPress Plugin Control Panel choose the “Deactivate All Plugins” from the options at the bottom. If you can’t get to the control panel but can still access FTP, you can move your plugins to a new subdirectory, this will deactivate them in WordPress.

2. Re-enable or Install WP-Cache2 (Preferably before the Storm)

3. Call Your Host and Ask for Mercy! ( 🙂 ) All joking aside if you see you are spiking from an article and Digg and other Social Media are catching on, contact your host, and try to avoid the dreaded “THIS ACCOUNT IS SUSPENDED!” Message.

Hope this has been very useful information. This may help in your case or it may not, but it is definitely worth a shot, in any case! Don’t try to go it alone. If you find yourself in the middle of a storm and would like some advice feel free to email glenn@interfaithnetworking.com!

Thanks for the tags and keep blogging. . .

Gift Card Ban! Top 10 Reasons I will Join Clark Howard in Giving Cash if I was going to Give a Giftcard

🙂 I had to post this link. http://clarkhoward.com/ads/clark/nogiftcards.html
First, It cracks me up just looking at Clark Howard’s Smile! (In a Good Way! :))

Second, this is really something I agree with. There is nothing more irritating then finding some limitation or other gotcha on these gift cards! Not to mention the exorbitant fees some of them charge! Just last Christmas, I got to pay $5 bucks for the privilege of giving a AMX gift card to my brother! Oh brother I say, but the other cards weren’t any better and he couldn’t use them at any other stores! Yikes. . . Third, this is a great way to say hey I forgot about you till the last minute, but at least I cared enough to go to the bank and get out cash for your Christmas present, instead of swiping my debit card in the store. . .
Fourth, life is full of surprises, having cash on hand may come in handy in those sticky situations.  oh . . .oops I only came up with 4 well they are 4 really good reasons.  If you can think of more please post in the comments!  🙂 link love is appreciated!
